ELIZABETHTOWN

In this wonderful romantic drama, a man finds himself in the most unlikely place. When Drew Baylor, played by Orlando Bloom, makes a huge mistake at work that costs his company millions and millions of dollars, he begins to feel that his life is over. When he attempts to commit suicide however, his sister calls him to tell him that his father has passed away. Hearing this news really makes him re-think his decision and appreciate life. This character portrays both a standard and non-standard male gender role through out the movie. His character is rather strong through out the whole ordeal of his father's death; he does not even cry once while he is town. On the other hand, he portrays a non-standard role by being very vulnerable to the flight attendant, Claire, played by Kirsten Dunst, that he meets. In this movie the roles are almost reversed because the male lead role has so much emotion to his character, while the female lead role is strong and independent. She begins to take care of Drew and starts to make him feel better about himself and his situation. In this case the male character was the one who needed saving and the female character saved him. Showing that the standard gender roles are being used less and less in more modern films. Hopefully all films in the future will begin to share the gender equality that this movie has represented.

CASANOVA

Whenever someone hears the name Casanova, one can not help but imagine a swauve, great looking guy that could sweep any girl off her feet. In the film Casanova, starring Heath Ledger and Sienna Miller, this is the exact character that Ledger plays. This romantic comedy/ drama is "a partially true story about lies told, virtue lost, and love found." This film not only offers an hour and 48 minutes worth of  entertainment, but shows a lovely portrayal of a non standard female gender role, played by Miller's character. In the century that this film is set in, women are usually portrayed as house wifes and as women who need a man in order to have a place in society. Women in this time period do not work, or provide for their family, they simply look pretty and attend social functions. Miller's character was a writer, she was an independent woman with thoughts and ideas of her own, but could only publish her work under a nomme de plume, which means, another name. The name she would use to publish her work was Bernarndo Guardi, which was of course male, since women were not allowed to publish such things in those days. Within the time period of the film, the male standard gender role is seen through out the movie with almost every male character. Ledger's character, Casanova, portrays this gender role very well. He is a man that any woman would want; he has no problem using women as objects and not seeing them as equals. His standard male gender role slightly begins to change to a non standard male gender role when he meets Miller's character. He begins to see how independent a woman can be and that makes him re-think the way he sees women in general. Overall, this is a fun film to see, even though it is set in a century many people might not be ale to relate to, the characters are timeless and can still relate with anyone in the world today.

BLOOD TIES

The television program Blood Ties on Lifetime, starring Christina Cox and Kyle Schmid, is an interesting program to say the least. It also however, shows a wonderful portrayal of a non standard female gender role and a standard male gender role. Christina's character displays the non standard female gender role by being an independent woman who runs her own private investigatons agency. She solves crimes, can take care of herself, and kicks butt whenever necessary.  Now Kyle's character on the other hand, depicts the male standard gender role pretty well. He is suave, cool, strong, and can protect his partner if need be, from everyday or supernatural harm. He is seen as a typical male because he can manipulate women to get what he wants, and only sees them as something lower than him, except for his partner played by Christina. Through out most of the program this is how these two characters are portrayed. Although there are instances when the gender roles switch and she is seen in a typical female gender role and he is seen in a non standard male gender role. Examples of this are wen she is solving a crime she always happens to occasionaly need help from her friendly vampire played by Kyle Schmid. Showing that she is not completely strong all the time and that she sometimes needs a man to come to her rescue. His chracter shows a non standard male gender role by sometimes needing comfort from a woman or just someone to listen, and shows that he is not stong all the time. This program shows a good look at how the gender roles can be switched off at any time through out the male and female characters, and is also a pretty good show to watch. I recommend that if you are in to the supernatural and love a little bit of drama, with a dash of excitement, this is the show for you. Blood Ties airs on Sundays at 9:00pm Central time or 10:00 Eastern Standard time on the Lifetime Channel. CHECK THIS SHOW OUT!

PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: The Curse of the Black Pearl

In the wonderful comedic thriller Pirates of the Carribean: The curse of the Black Pearl, the characters played by Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Kiera Knightley really do represent the standard and non standard female and male gender roles. In the very beginning of the film the English sailors pick up a young a boy that was floating on the water, and the Governor tells his daughter Elizabeth to take care of him. From that point in the movie they establish that the female role in this movie is the standard female gender role of being less than a male and a care taker of the family. At this point, you also see the standard male gender role being portrayed by all of the male characters. As the film progresses we see that the gender roles don't seem to change much between the men or women. Although, the one change we do see in the film, is when Keira Knightley's character is older and begins to act more independednt, like a modern day woman of today, rather than the standard stereotypical woman of that century. However, the gender role portrayed by the men in the rest of the movie continue to be the standard male gender role, of acting strong, manly, and drinking. Overall, this movie displays a good look at both male and female gender roles and is with out a doubt a fantastic movie in general.

ROCK STAR

In the 2001 film Rock Star, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston, there is good portrayal of standard and non-standard gender roles. Towards the middle of the film, Wahlberg's character becomes the replacement vocalist for a popular rock band. His girlfriend played by Aniston, is a true rock star girlfriend that completely supports her man and is at every show that he does. At this point in the film Wahlberg adopt sthe typical male gender role by hanging out with the guys and doing what "guys do." This means that he has begun drinking, messing around, and has completely fallen into the world of a true rock star. At the same time Aniston's character is portraying a non-standard female gender role by being a completely independent woman that does not need a man around for everything she does. The gender roles begin to switch later on through out the movie by Wahlberg's character begining to have feelings, and realize that things in his life are not exaclty how he wanted them. He realizes that having everything a rock star has isn't worth it with out his girlfrriend. In this case his character is now portraying a non-standard male gender role. While Aniston's character begins to revert back to a standard female gender role by wanting and needing her man back in her life. Overall, besides this movie's characters portraying a good sense of standard and non-standard gender roles; this movie is also a must see for music lovers and dreamers everywhere. Enjoy!
