| | In the 2001 film Rock Star, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston, there is good portrayal of standard and non-standard gender roles. Towards the middle of the film, Wahlberg's character becomes the replacement vocalist for a popular rock band. His girlfriend played by Aniston, is a true rock star girlfriend that completely supports her man and is at every show that he does. At this point in the film Wahlberg adopt sthe typical male gender role by hanging out with the guys and doing what "guys do." This means that he has begun drinking, messing around, and has completely fallen into the world of a true rock star. At the same time Aniston's character is portraying a non-standard female gender role by being a completely independent woman that does not need a man around for everything she does. The gender roles begin to switch later on through out the movie by Wahlberg's character begining to have feelings, and realize that things in his life are not exaclty how he wanted them. He realizes that having everything a rock star has isn't worth it with out his girlfrriend. In this case his character is now portraying a non-standard male gender role. While Aniston's character begins to revert back to a standard female gender role by wanting and needing her man back in her life. Overall, besides this movie's characters portraying a good sense of standard and non-standard gender roles; this movie is also a must see for music lovers and dreamers everywhere. Enjoy!
